Candesvara (the lord of Canda)

Minor god. Hindu (Epic and Puranic). A benevolent aspect of SˇIVA. Also an attendant on Sˇiva, said to have been a youthful cowherd. He sits on a lotus throne. Attributes: arrow, ax, bow, club, crown, hatchet, noose, rosary, snake, trident and water jar.

Dhvajagrakeyura (ring on a banner)

Goddess. Buddhist (Mahayana). An emanation of AKSOBHYA. She sits on a sun throne. Color: dark blue, black or yellow. Attributes: club, image of Aksobhya, noose, pestle, prayer wheel, staff, sword, tiger skin and trident. Three-headed and three-eyed.

Attar

God of the morning star. Western Semitic. In Canaanite legend, he attempts to usurp the dead BAAL but proves inadequate to fill the god’s throne. In semi-arid regions of western Asia where irrigation is essential, he was sometimes worshiped as a rain god. His female counterpart is the Phoenician ASTARTE. Also probably identified as Dhu-Sˇamani in more southerly regions.

Mordred

Traitorous leader of the rebellion that leads to Arthur’s downfall. Originally named Medraut, a legendary and possibly historical Welsh figure who diasgrees with Arthur and does battle with him at Camlann, with fatal results for both. However, the Welsh do not make him plotting or evil. Geoffrey of Monmouth is responsible for the villainous role he assumes in later medieval literature. Possibly revealing an other than Welsh influence, Geoffrey changes the name to Modred, a Cornish or Breton name. Modred is Arthur’s nephew who rules jointly with Guinevere during Arthur’s campaign in Gaul. Modred persuades the Queen into an aldulterous affair and usurps the throne, making peace with the hated Saxons, whom Arthur had destroyed at Badon.Arthur speeds home and engages him by the River Camel in Cornwall. The rebellious usurper is killed and Arthur is borne to Avalon.

Aurelius Ambrosius

Uncle to Arthur in Geoffrey of Monmouth. Brother to Uther Pendragon and son of King Constantine, he is raised in Brittany with his brother to avoid the scheming of the usurper Vortigern. Upon reaching manhood, the brothers return to England and overthrow Vortigern, making Aurelius king. He defeats and executes the Saxon chief, Hengist and erects Stonehenge with the aid of Merlin as a monument over the mass grave of 460 nobles massacred by Hengist. Shortly after, Ambrosius is poisoned by a son of Vortigern seeking vengeance and Uther succeeds the throne.
