Among the Basques, a representative of the goddess Mari, depicted as a black billy-goat. The occupation of goat and sheep herding was very important to the Basques and this representation of Mari is a protective one of herds and herders. This representation was severely demonized with the onset of Christianity and black billy-goats were prominent familiars at witch trials. It is better to remember that the Akerbeltz (ram-field) was a healing goddess in male goat form.
